“My husband and I had a wonderful time on this trip. Not only did we get an unforgettable experience with the turtles (which were all in very good condition), our guide also gave us an unexpected tour of a local village where we attempted weaving and coconut shaving with the elder and learnt about local culture. At no point were we pressured to buy anything and felt this whole morning was a genuine and welcome experience. Would highly recommend.”

9.Prison Island, Tortoise, Jozani Forest Guided Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.2 · 68 reviews · 6 - 8 hours · from $100

Travel from Zanzibar to Prison Island by boat for its old buildings, giant tortoises, coral waters, and beach time. Then walk through Jozani Forest with a guide to see red colobus monkeys and mangroves. Some departures add Nakupenda Sandbank, lunch, fruit, drinks, and snorkeling.

“The conditions for the tortoises on Prison Island are poor. The place is not a sanctuary or a conservation center. The tortoises are kept in a small, fenced area with many tourists. They cannot move freely, and their environment feels unnatural. Overall, it seems more like a prison for tortoises than a place focused on animal welfare or protection. I would skip prison island and only go to jozani forest. The guide and driver, transportation and everything else was great. We got to see red colobus monkeys on their natural habitat in jozani forest.”

“Tour was great, was a last minute booking after we realized we had a few more hours free than expected before we departed for something else. The hike itself wasn't super challenging if you're fairly active, but it was quite nice, and unmarked so the guide was needed. Our guide Frank was super chill, took hit time to show us the beauty, when we go to the fall itself was super patient and never pushy as we took time to take it all in. He was also nice to chat with both on the drive to/from and while walking. It was clear the whole way through he had amazing energy…”
